ADMERICA! This is my second time attending the AAF (American Advertising Federation) National Conference, and I have to say San Diego’s Ad Club and Ad2 did an amazing job hosting. The weather lacked humidity and over compensated with sunshine. The beaches were rocky and blue, and no one neighborhood was like the other. As Co-Chair of AD2 Cincinnati’s Public Service committee, I presented this year’s fully integrated advertising and marketing campaign for our client, Elementz Hip Hop Youth Arts Center in Over The Rhine, at the Ad2 National Public Service competition. Conferences like this one instantly remind me why I…

I’m currently reading Charlene Li’s latest book Open Leadership, and though I am only through the first chapter, I can already tell it is a book that I will recommend to clients in the future. I attended a luncheon last month that Charlene was speaking at via Skype. Her thoughts on brand engagement from a leadership position resonated with me, as it touched on issues I face daily when dealing with our social media clients. Essentially, her discussion was on the importance of treating your Brand’s social media channels just as you would any relationship. After all, they are relationships. Your…

I noticed Gap posts weren’t showing up in my Facebook newsfeed a few weeks ago. Curious, I typed "Gap" in the search field. No results. Any Facebook user knows this is not the case when you are friends with an individual or “Like” a page. I google searched Gap’s Facebook Page and I clicked on the link. The link sent me to the Page with the “Like” icon displayed for users who have yet to fan the page. And then I realized Gap had removed me from its page. And then I remembered this entry that could have elicited their…

Yesterday I asked John if he had any index cards. He told me that he did, but they were already written on. He had, a while back, begun writing one word on each of them and the word's definition on its back. His way to learn new words. It reminded me of a class activity I did in college. My professor had us take a week to write 500 of our most favorite words. 500. At the time I thought it would take forever. Why are we doing this? Don't get me wrong, I love language, but really? She explained…

I walked into my bathroom yesterday to find my five-year-old sitting on the toilet with my husband’s iPhone in hand. I can honestly say I was only slightly surprised, but more annoyed as we were running late for an appointment. The same kid created her own album of pictures by age three, we affectionately titled, “A day in the life-of (her name),” and by four she was accessing YouTube videos of Disney Princesses. Just the other day I got my phone back just in time to see that she had been browsing the Toys”R”Us app, and was nearly closing out…

What drives people to social media platforms? That’s a no-brainer, we want to connect and share something meaningful. We do it because we want to engage with others by sharing something personal; thus, a dialogue ignites. And, eventually, everyone is buzzing. When our client, Becoming Mom, a company that offers 4-D ultrasound and Prenatal and Postpartum Spa services, reached out to us to wanting a plan to increase their Facebook presence, we knew just how to seal the deal. Let’s be real, new parents love sharing photos of their offspring (Have you ever been cornered by one in a break room?) Not…

I’ve been a loyal Gap customer since I was in diapers. Maybe a better way to put that is, my mother’s been a loyal Gap customer since I was in diapers. So when doing my daily social media research, I was filled with joy to see that the store that has been clothing me for quite some time was partnering with Facebook’s Places to offer the first 10,000 customers who check in a free pair of denim jeans. Convincing my boss that I HAD to participate for research purposes was a little difficult, but this morning I headed to the…

Some of you reading this may be fearful of the social media “wave.” However, Gap is a perfect example why your businesses’ life depends on it. As the old saying goes, “If you can’t beat them, join them.” And let’s be honest, social media will not be defeated. Ask Gap. In the past few weeks the well-known retailer both introduced and pulled back on a new logo due to an overwhelmingly negative response from its audience on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Twitter users detested the new logo so much that they created a Twitter account for…

Move over Tyra, you’ve got competition. The Signal crew spent yesterday hanging out with the fabulous guys at Creative Production Resource, Inc, struttin’ our stuff for the camera. After spending the day tilting our chins down, and heads a little to the right, we have a newfound respect for models. It’s not as easy as it looks. But by the end of the session, we were James Bonding the camera with our charisma. Okay, we may not truly measure up to the likes of Tyra Banks, more like Zoolander, but we had a lot of fun striking a pose for…

Divisions wanted to offer field personnel the ability to take a picture with a cell phone while on site and send it to select accounts in their Microsoft CRM system. We took the request a step further and designed an application, “D-Vision,” that allows them to take as many pictures as…
